Family History and General Information

Bird is 125 cm tall and weighs 19 kilos and comes from Kanchanaburi. His parents are casual workers and must move around a lot to find work. For this reason they have left Bird with his uncle. He has been assigned to the First Entry Level. It has been noted that Birds mental capabilities appear very limited and he is slow. Communications with Bird have to be repeated several times in order to have him understand what is being said to him. We will keep him under close supervision during his evaluation period.

November, 2003

At present, Bird is in good health, weighing19.5 kilos with a height of 127 cm. He remains in the First Entry level and by all appearances, this appears to be the extent of his capabilities. He still needs special care with regards to his daily personal requirements; especially those involved with hygiene. Every now and then, he appears to be able to converse with his teachers, however his ability to absorb instructions seems to be somewhat limited. We will continue to monitor him with the hope that there will be some improvement in the future. His family has little contact with him or the school. (Tim)

November, 2004

Bird remains in the same class as before. He is now 23 kilograms in weight and 132 centimeters in height. Bird continues to receive strict training in his daily self-care especially those in personal hygiene. He continues to be slow due to his mental deficiency. Bird, nevertheless, enjoys good health. He spends all his time here at the School even during the long holiday, as his family appears to have abandoned him completely to the School’s care. (NS)

October, 2005

Bird is now in the 2nd entry level. He continues to enjoy good health and is now 25 kilograms in weight and 137 centimeters in height. He is capable of communication with his teacher, however his overall progress is very slow. Although he may be able to attend to some of his daily personal requirements, he continues to need help especially in hygienic care. (NS)

May, 2006

Poor Bird spent the entire long summer holiday at our School. It appeared that his family and relatives have decided to ignore his existence and to abandon him in the School’s care. Several attempts of following-up have been made without any success. In the meantime at the beginning of this school year in the early part of this month, May 2006, it was deemed appropriate to transfer Bird to the 3rd entry level so that he may be with other students who are in the same age range and who also have the same level of mental capability. Bird will no longer be considered for entrance into the formal schooling. He shall be trained for a vocation. Bird is now 26 kilograms in weight and 140 centimeters in height. He enjoys good health. (NS)

November, 2006

Bird continues on with his vocational training along with many of his friends in the same age range and with the same mental capability. His weight and his height remain pretty much the same as those previously measured. Although Bird is enjoying good physical health, he continues to need help in attending to his daily personal needs. Bird is being encouraged to get involved in simple sports to help him with his daily physical exercises. (NS)

June, 2007

There has been some very slow progress in Bird’s overall training, especially in his daily routine personal self-needs. Yet the training teachers all express their pride and joy upon recognizing the improvement as each and every one of them is joyful to see the blind students especially those with mental deficiencies, make some evident progress. They know that all their hard work paid off and continues to give them ever more strength and energy to help other students with the same problem. In order that Bird may be in the same group of students with similar capabilities, he remains in the 3rd entry level – group 2. Bird continues to receive all kinds of training in doing routine daily house chores. Academic study is set aside for his benefit unless of course, by some miracle, he makes some drastic improvements. In the meantime, Bird continues to enjoy his good physical health. In his recent measurement, it shows that his weight has increased to 30 kilograms while his height has gone to 150 centimeters as opposed to 25 kilograms in weight and 143 centimeters. The new school year has already started and Bird continues on with his usual training and learning. (NS)

January, 2008

Bird is enjoying good health. The teacher expresses relief and satisfaction over his general overall progress especially in his being able to attend to most of his daily personal needs with a little help in relation to taking care of his personal hygienic needs. Bird also made some progresses over his academic study in being able to memorize his alphabets and vowels. Bird gets along with others but on the other hand, he expresses no desires to be involved in either sports or music. Bird attends to all of our School’s activities, which include: Loy Krathong Festival, the National Father’s Day, Miss Caulfield’s Memorial Day, and Christmas Celebration. (NS)

August, 2008

Bird remains in the same educational level – 3rd entry level, so that he may be in the same group with his classmates of similar mental intelligence and understanding. He was transferred from – 3rd entry level group 2 to 3rd entry level group 3. There are presently 24 students in his class. Bird is enjoying good health. He continues to need help in attending to his daily routine personal needs, however, he is capable of brushing his own teeth, feeding himself, and also attending to his personal hygienic requirements. His teacher encourages Bird in stringing beads to help him with maintaining his concentration. Bird has been noted to do well in this regard. He also gets along well with his classmates and friends. His favorite sport at this time is goal-ball. Bird is well recognized by his teachers as being one of the more well behaved and courteous students. His teacher encouraged him to participate in our school’s activities. (NS)

February, 2009

The school was closed for the whole month of October for a holiday between the first and second terms of the school year. Most of the students returned home to be with their families. Bird continues on with his training as well as in his academic study in his usual normal slow advancement due to his existing mental condition. Nevertheless, his teacher is pleased with his progress. Bird is strong and healthy. He is 39 kilograms in weight and 167 centimeters in height. Bird can now feed himself and he can also attend to his personal hygienic needs with very little help from his friends or from his teacher. Bird continues to sing as well as to be friendly with other students. His teacher was very pleased with his capability to spell and to memorize the Braille alphabet in Thai. (NS)

July, 2009

Bird continues on with his self-care training to which he has made some positive and noticeable improvements, slowly but surely. Bird now can feed himself, attend to his own bathing by himself, and walk from one place to another within the school’s campus especially to the dining hall. Bird also shows sign of being able to associate with others fairly well with whom he likes to play goal-ball. Unfortunately, as time goes by, the contact with his family seems to have diminished and presently, Bird spent all of his time at our school, even during the long school holiday. Bird continues to be strong and healthy. In his last measurement, it had been found that Bird was 41 kilograms in weight and 168 centimeters in height. Bird now, with the help and guidance from his teachers, makes every attempt to participate in as many of our school’s activities as possible. For his own benefit, Bird remains to be in the same class, 3rd Entry Level, for yet another year. (NS)

February, 2010

Bird continues improve in attending to his daily self-help needs while at the same time he still looks for help in some delicate day-to-day routine, such as, getting dressed, bathing and cleaning himself. Everyone is happy to see how well he progresses with the hope that someday he shall be able to do everything independently. In the meantime, Bird is enjoying his good health. He is now 44 kilograms in weight and 169 centimeters in height. Bird is also making some progresses in his Braille study and practices. He enjoys the company of his friends with whom he enjoys playing goal-ball whenever they may find time in the afternoon after regular classes.
