Fr. Ray Vocational School for the Disabled
Family History and General Information
Khem’s birthplace is Narathiwat, a province in the south of Thailand. His parents are school teachers at Narathiwat and live there. Khem has only one younger brother studying in university in Songkhla. Khem lives alone at home also in Songkhla, a province in the South. His parents visit Khem and his brother occasionally during their school holidays. Khem finished twelve years of his schooling from the secondary school in Songkhla in March 2001 and started work in a fishery business. In 2003 he commenced a four-year University course in fishery. In 2006, whilst in the third year of this course, he was travelling to University in a mini-bus. The owner and driver of this bus stopped at a filling station and was confronted by a man holding a gun who had a grudge against him. The man fired the gun but missed the mini-bus owner, the bullet hitting Khem in the back of his shoulder. Khem was admitted to hospital where he stayed for one and a half months. Khem’s spinal chord was broken and he is paralysed from the top of his chest downwards. He has had to learn to breathe from his abdomen because of this injury. The doctors said it was too dangerous to remove the bullet so it is still in Khem’s body. After he left hospital, Khem had physical therapy at Sawangkhanivas Rehabilitation Centre near Bangkok, run by the Red Cross, for five months and this is where he learned about the Fr. Ray Vocational School for the Disabled. Before coming to our School, Khem lived alone at home and was able to look after himself, receiving financial support from his parents. He went out to the hospital for physical therapy 3 days a week. Khem was extremely glad to have been accepted after passing the entrance examination. He now has a place in the Information System Development class. His mother took leave and accompanied him to our School. November, 2008 After being here for nearly one month, Khem is happy. He has adapted to the School’s routine but finds he is not as strong as some of his friends. He is experiencing no problems with the class and says the food and accommodation are very good. The School provides many sports and activities, especially adapted for the disabled, in which our students are encouraged to participate. Khem has joined the fencing group. Khem sends his thanks to the Sponsors for their support for the school which enables the students to receive good vocational training. (CS) May, 2009 A few days after having been through an exhaustive school’s year-end final examination, everyone expressed a sign of relief and at the same time looked forward to a long summer holiday when they would be welcomed back to their homes, their family, and of course their friends and neighbors, starting from the 28th of March and lasting until the early part of this month, May, the start of the new academic year. Khem, who is always considered to be one of the class’s top students and who is always a hard-working and diligent student, passed the year-end final examination with an overall remarkable average grade at 85.33%. Undoubtedly, Khem continues to work hard in his academic study as he is now advancing to the second semester of his first academic year in the Information System Development Courses. Khem is not only outstanding in his study; he also gets along well with others in general. Khem has always shown himself to be a good student who is in good behavior as well as in good conduct. He expresses his willingness in participating and helping in the worthwhile school’s activities which usually are of benefits to the society in general. (SS) January, 2010 In the school’s mid-year examination which took place towards the end of September and just before the beginning of the school’s long holiday in the month of October marking the split of the 1st and the 2nd semester of the 2009 academic year, Khem was able to succeed quite satisfactorily with an overall average grade of 70.67% covering 6 subjects: CS201 Structural Programming -52.50%, CS202 Computer Installation and Trouble Shooting -81.50%, CS203 Website Development 1 -72%, EI201 English -96%, IT201 Information usage for Management -60%, and LS201 Life and Society -62%. Khem is found to be a good student who may be relied upon to comply with all school’s rules and regulations. He is responsible in all his school’s assignments as well as school’s social activities. Khem is enjoying good general health. (NS) April, 2010 In the 2nd school term covering November 2009 through March 2010, Khem was able to pass the school’s year-end final examination with an overall average grade of 69.96% covering 6 subjects: CS301 Windows Programming I – 74.75%, CS304 Website Development II – 56%, EI301 English III – 72%, IT301 Information System Development – 71%, LS301 Life and Society – 66%, and NW301 Network Installation – 80%. Khem continues to be a good student who complies with all of the school’s rules and regulations. He is a responsible and courteous person. He also participates actively in all of our school’s social activities. Khem appears to be doing well in his vocational training. He should be encouraged to spend more time in reviewing and in studying while he is at home during the school’s long summer holiday so that he may be ready to learn new lessons when the school starts in May of this year.
