Family History and General Information

Nam was abandoned by his parents when he was born. He lived with his grandmother and relatives in his hometown. He completed his primary school and preferred living with his friends to his relatives when he headed into his teen years. He enjoyed going out with his friends and felt bored when he was warned of the potential problems if he continued on with his ways. At 14 years of age, Nam ran away from home. He had no safe shelter and no one to support him in Pattaya. He decided to ask for help from our staff at the Drop-In Center and was accepted to be one of our residents in September. Here at the Drop-In Center, Nam displays himself as a quiet young teenager who is not so self-confident, however, he eagerly participates in all planned activities happening at the Center. (WS)

February, 2009

Nam is now working as a part-time waiter at the Ruan Thai Restaurant. He works from 7 p.m. to 23 p.m. and earns 120 baht for this shift. It is hard work but he proudly works at this position. At least it is an honest job. Before he worked at the restaurant, he worked at a dog-training company where he was offered free room and board. Facing the economic crisis, the company was closed. Nam works daily at his job and saves some money. He enjoys playing football in his free time. Talking about his goal, he wants to complete the lower secondary educational level and find a job that will support him and let him save some money. (WS)

Being a young teenager, Nam lacks self-confidence and displays himself as a follower to others. He knows what is right or wrong, but he decides to follow the way of others. He mixes well with everyone and takes part in the planned activities at our Drop-In Center. Like other teenagers, Nam needs acceptance from his people especially from his family. He plans to finish school and shows his certificate to his family. His dream may come true soon as he is now more responsible and attentively pays attention to his government’s non-formal educational program. He develops well at the moment and appears to be a quicker learner. He capably solves his own problems. Having many useful exposures and experiences at our Drop-In Center provides him with greater visions. In the past, his brain was partially damaged by using addictive inhalants. He now becomes stronger and healthier as he usually involves himself in sports. He often plays football. He has shown definite attempt to quit cigarette smoking. Additionally, Nam also applied to take courses at Chonburi Provincial Institute of Skill Development and he is looking forward to courses which would be of most beneficial to him, the electrical or the mechanical courses are what he is most interested in. June, 2009

Since our Drop-In Center is only a temporary place of residence until a suitable solution can be found, there is no budget for supporting the residents’ education and vocational training. Nam and three teenagers from our Drop-In Center were referred to our Children’s Home on the 1st of June, 2009. Nam is now attending the big motor mechanical course at the Chonburi Provincial Institute of Skill Development, and he continues his academic studies in the government’s non-formal education program in the lower secondary educational level. He hopes he can find suitable employment after he finishes the course. Our staff from the Drop-In Center will co-operate in the follow-up of his progress until he finishes the course. (WS)

January, 2010

In the early part of October of last year (2009), Nam and a couple of his friends were caught in the act while consuming and inhaling addictive substances in his living quarters at the vocational training institute he was attending. The school’s administration subsequently requested that Nam be discharged from the institute. Nam was brought back to our Drop-In Center with the hope to find new possibility for him. It was first agreed that he should be transferred to a place to cure him off his addictions. In the course of the preparation, Nam ran away from our Drop-In Center and went to live with his friend in Ayutthaya Province, the old and ancient capitol of the country, which is in the central region of the country with the hope of finding some employment. In November Nam returned to our Drop-In Center once again for help and residency. We were unable to agree on any solution and once again he took off with the intention to return to his hometown in Prachuapkhirikhan Province which is in the southern part of the country. Since then we were unable to make any contact with him and it deems appropriate to remove his name from our record in the meantime. (NS)
