School for the Blind Sports Day

The annual sports day at the School for the Blind took place on the morning of Wednesday 24th February.
The students were all split into two teams (Green Team - favourite colour of Father Ray, and Blue Team - Favourite colour of Ms Caulfield, an American lady who brought education for the blind to Thailand) and the competition was fierce.

The day started early with both teams marching into the school grounds led by the marching band, where they were met by Khun Aurora, Principal of the School who welcomed all students, before asking the Deputy Mayor of Pattaya to ring the bell to start the Games.
Most children were expected to take part in at least one competition, and it truly is an amazing sight to see these young children running, skipping and swimming. It takes so many hours of practice and support from the teachers who direct and guide the children.

In the running races the children have to run around the school grounds, and for those children who are inexperienced they will have a teacher running beside them who will be calling instructions out to them; go straight, slightly left, turn right, leading them to the finish line.
Goal Ball is now an international sport played at the Paralympic Games, and consists of three players per team and the aim is to throw a ball and hope that the opposing team do not stop it going into the net. Sounds easy, except that the ball has a small bell inside which the players can hear, and they will throw themselves on the floor trying to catch the ball.
At the end of the competition the eventual winners were the Green Team, whilst the Blue Team won the competition for the Best Cheerleading Team, so everyone is a winner at the end of the day.
