Family History and General Information
Orn comes from a poor family in Kamphaeng Phet – a province in the north of Thailand. She lived with her father, mother and older brother and older half-sister until tragedy struck in 2011. At the time Orn’s father was a general worker while her mother is unemployed. From the desperation of their poverty, Orn and her mother would wander around the 7 km area around their home begging. One evening while begging, her mother was hit by a car and died instantly. After that heart-breaking day her father decided he would do everything possible to change young Orn’s life for the better. She was eight years old at the time and had never seen the inside of a classroom.
Having never entered formal education until now, she started Grade 1 at the age of eight. She spent two years in Grade 1 before being able to move forward, but in 2017 she was able to do very well in Grade 5.
At her school in Kamphaengphet Orn was able to receive 3 free meals a day and even had a Sister from a local church help her with an extra 20 baht per day. Unfortunately, her family’s life has not been able to improve much. Her father continues to be a general work and is now joined by her brother in the field. Every night after a long, hard day or work both her father and brother drink until there are drunk. This unsafe situation coupled with the impermanent and dangerous shack Orn’s family lives in made it a completely unsuitable place to grow up in. With Orn being a young teenager girl she began to receive unwanted and inappropriate attention from male neighbours. In order to keep her safe and remove her from this dangerous situation, the Sister decided to ask for help from our Drop-In Center with the hope that Orn receives the best education available, and therefore the possibility of a good future.
Orn finished her 2nd term of Grade 6. She continues her Grade 7 when the new school year started at the middle of this month. This past school term her favourite subject was Art as she finds that it is a great way for her to express herself. On the other hand, the hardest subject for her was Mathematics, as she said it can take her a long time to solve the maths problems.
At school, Orn gets along well with all her classmates. Last term, she had a chance to join in the annual sport games where she competed in volleyball, and she won the silver medal. Well done Orn! She is friends with everyone, but at the Village, her best friends are Prite and Pat. They are very close and prefer to talk amongst each other. They are chatting about life and anything that is happening at the Village and the school. They enjoy playing badminton and volleyball together.
Orn has a very good appetite, eating pretty much anything, but her favourite food she says is stir fried minced pork with basil leaves- a very popular answer amongst our children. Overall, she continues to be healthy and strong with no major issues.
Orn is living happily in House Number 9. During the school’s holidays she was lucky to be able to go to Hat Sai Kaew Navy Beach with the rest of the Village. Orn loves swimming and she had an amazing time playing in the water and sand – exploring all the little fish and creatures the beach had to offer. Moreover, she also participated in a charity project called “Strengthening Social Immunity of Children and Youth”at the Children’s Home.
