After all the singing of Christmas carols, wrapping presents, cooking food and decorating the stage it was time for the children’s Christmas party.

More than eight hundred children and students arrived for the annual party which, for the first time ever, had been organised by the children and students and it was a night to remember.

The children started to arrive as the sun was going down and once everyone was together the Christmas lights were turned on, which were greeted by lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’.

A very large variety of food was available before the main party started and it is always surprising just how quiet so many children can be when they are eating. Roast chicken, spicy salads, noodles, chicken satay, fresh fruit and glasses of sugary drinks were served and there was enough to make sure everyone had enough to eat.

The main stage had performances from the children and students and one of the highlights was the wheelchair dance performance, which this year included one of our female students.

The youngsters from the Day Care Center were supposed to perform a dance routine, but when they discovered how bouncy the stage was all they did was jump up and down.

The teenage boys from the Children’s Home performed a selection of songs from popular boy bands, but at times the screaming from their female housemates drowned out the music.

Another highlight of the evening was the arrival on stage of two five year olds from the School for the Blind, who sang a well known song and surprised everyone by having such wonderful strong voices.

As in previous years the volunteers performed several songs, including their very own rendition of Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ and as usual their performance ended with thousands of pieces of candy being thrown into the audience.

But the best was yet to come when the children were called to receive their Christmas gifts, and for many of the children and students it was their first time they have ever celebrated this time of year and we know it will be a night many will never forget.
